IPL Therapy

The use of IPL (Intense Pulse Light) technology the last few years has seen some excellent improvements in hair removal and skin rejuvination. Here are a few text book explanations of how it can work for you.

What is IPL?
IPL is a high strength, broad spectrum and non-succession light, which can permeate the epidermis of the skin to the derma layer. Utilizing the selective absorption elements, the light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicles. Through the optical (light) and thermal (heat) effect generated and sourced, it achieves the purpose of removing hair by destroying the hair follicle tissue rapidly and after several treatments the hair growth is lessened and reduced.

IPL can affect the pigment and blood vessels to break down the abnormal pigmented cells. It will stimulate the proliferation of collagen and improve elastin in the dermal layer of the skin. IPL is very successful in reducing skin pigmentation and skin rejuvenation by reducing acne scarring, lines and wrinkles.

How does it work?

IPL works on the same principle as lasers in that light energy is absorbed into particular target cells with colour (chromophores) in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy, which causes damage to the specific target area. IPL uses filters to refine the energy output for the treatment of certain areas. This enhances penetration without using excessive energy levels and enables targeting of specific chromophores (the skin components that absorb light).

IPL therapy is considered a non-ablative resurfacing technique, which means that it targets the lower layers of skin (dermis) without affecting the top layers of skin (epidermis). The advantage of IPL therapy is its minimal downtime - a client can often have the procedure done in their lunch break and return to work immediately after.

Vascular lesions
: For the treatment of spider and thread veins and some vascular birth marks. Light pulses target the red-pigment (haemoglobin) in the blood which heats and destroys the pigment without affecting the skin or other tissues.

Pigmented lesions
: For the treatment of age spots, freckles, flat pigmented birthmarks and other skin discolouration problems such as melasma/chloasma, and erythromelanosis of the neck (poikiloderma or civatte). Light pulses targeted at the melanin the in skin's surface heat and destroy melanin to remove the discolouration.

Hair removal
: For the treatment of unwanted hair. Light pulses targeted at the hair follicle causing the hair to fall out and prevent further growth. Generally ineffective on white or light coloured hair.

IPL rejuvenates skin!
This process will perform a skin rejuventation treatment that will help to soften the visible aspects of all factors; softening lines and wrinkles and tightening skin, reducing pigmentation and vascular conditions. New collagen is formed in response to the body's perceived injury to "heal" the wound, whether that is by surgical intervention or traumatic injury. The light of the IPL penetrates deep into the dermal layer of the skin tissue, heating up the dermal microvasulature and triggering off the "healing" response.

What does the procedure involve?
Prior to the procedure, you come into Garden of Eden Beauty & Wellbeing for your complimentary consultation which takes about 15 minutes. We go through and explain to you all the information regarding hair removal and/or skin rejuvenation. We make an assessment of the areas you would like to have treated and your suitability for treatment, and give you an accurate cost at that time. There is no obligation or charge should you not wish to proceed with treatment after the initial consultation.

A complimentary patch test of the area can be performed should you wish to trial the treatment. To commence treatment, you are asked to shave the area to be treated three days prior to your appointment, as the light pulses target the root of the hair follicle quite effectively, rather than the hair shaft.

Points you should note -
· Avoid sun exposure in the days and weeks before and after treatment
· Cold gel is applied to the area being treated
· The smooth glass surface of the IPL treatment head is applied to the skin, delivering precise pulses of light to the treatment area
· Sessions vary from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated
· A course of 5 to 8 sessions can be required to achieve desired results
· Always use a sunscreen on treated areas exposed to sun
· The treatment area needs to be shaved three days prior to your session

Are there any side affects?
Because there is quite a variation in hair and skin types from person to person, as well as differing irritation or pain thresholds, taking advantage of the complimentary patch test is a good first step. You may experience -
· Slight pain during treatment (reduced by contact cooling)
· Skin turning pink and a little sore immediately after the procedure
· Sensation of mild sunburn (redness, peeling, swelling) that may last a few days after treatment
